The 2008 Olympian is now known for more than just her wild hairstyles. Written by: Megan Whitney Kinney Olympian Anna Pierce is perhaps best known for her fast times and funky hair colors. The talented middle distance runner lives and trains at altitude in Mammoth Lakes, Calif., under coach Terrence Mahon. Pierce is a multidimensional athlete whose had great success at 800 meters, 1,500 meters and the steeplechase. This past summer Pierce took first place in the 1,500 at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, and at age 26 she’s accomplished feats most other elite middle-distance runners can only dream of accomplishing over the course of an entire career. She’s broken 4 minutes in the 1,500 meters, run under 2 minutes in the 800 and took first place in the steeplechase at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2008. Competitor.com recently caught up with Anna “Fierce” Pierce to talk about her most recent track season, what it’s like training with Terrence Mahon and The Mammoth Track Club, as well as what her goals are heading into this winter and the upcoming indoor and outdoor track seasons. It was a crazy week in New York City. I never thought I would say this, but it is way easier to run than to work at these events. One of my days consisted of a 4:00 am wake-up call only to return to our hotel at 10:30 that night. Long days. Now that a good night’s sleep (11 hours) is behind me, I can say it was a blast. I was able to be on air with Al Roker for his morning weather report, help raise money for New York Road Runners Youth Programs, run with various magazine editors whom my husband is coaching and be the keynote speaker at the New York Athletic Club dinner...(for more click here)
It was like Alex Rodriguez coming to hit grounders to the Hillsborough High School baseball team. That’s how Raiders cross country and track coach Rich Refi described the visit of Meb Keflezighi to Hillsborough High School on Tuesday afternoon. Mr. Keflezighi, the 2009 ING New York Marathon champion and fresh off a sixth-place finish in Sunday’s New York Marathon, impressed student-athletes with his message of balance, wowed them with accounts of his accomplishments and inspired them while leading them through a stretching routine on the track after a question-and-answer session. ”We’ve been very fortunate,” said Alysia Puma, the Hillsborough teacher who established a connection to Mr. Keflezighi at the Boston Marathon in April. “To some degree, we seized the moment. We benefited from it, and I’m really glad to have him here.” Ms. Puma was running before the Boston Marathon when she passed Mr. Keflezighi on a run. They ran together for five minutes while Ms. Puma proposed to him a visit to Hillsborough. In the five minutes they ran together, she got an e-mail address for him...

With the 2010 ING New York City Marathon in the books I wanted to give my take on the year of Marathons. Granted there are still a few Marathons to be run before the years close but I doubt that either the world lead or the USA lead will be challenged. First I should admit that I have a keen interest in the Marathon. Perhaps you share this interest with me. Of course I have never done the marathon but my joining the Mammoth Track Club was very influenced by my desire to do one eventually. The topic of my eventual debut is something that has come up between Terrence and me repeatedly through my tenure here. That said I am not good enough at my long runs and long tempos. I am not quite disciplined enough with my stretching or my diet. I struggle on my uphill runs and even though I can often be fearless to the point that it is detrimental, I must admit that I am simply not ready to go race 26.2 just yet. I predicted privately that Brett Gotcher would run 2:11 in Houston and he did me one better with his 2:10. I watched keenly as my teammates Meb and Ryan ran in Boston, each with game plans to take home the trophy get upended by one of the greatest marathon performances in histor...
Nov 5, 2010 - On Sunday, Meb Keflezighi will look to become the first American male to win back-to-back New York City Marathons since Alberto Salazar accomplished the feat in 1982. The 2010 ING NYC Marathon, the largest marathon in the world, with nearly 44,000 finishers in 2009, begins at 8:30 A.M. ET Sunday morning with the wheelchair division; the professional women and men starting at 9:10 A.M. and 9:40 A.M., respectively. They were both too old, their aging bodies too battered — or so people said. Even Derartu Tulu didn’t believe she would win. “I knew that at one point I would be good [again], but I didn’t think it would be in New York,” said the 38-year-old Ethiopian, who had taken time off after the birth of her second child and was still easing back into competition. But last year Tulu and American Meb Keflezighi, now 35, stunned the running world with upset wins at the ING New York City Marathon. On Sunday, each will try and do it again... Defending Champion Meb Keflezighi Ready to Repeat at 41st Annual ING New York Ci
November 4, 2010, 5:05pm
Defending men’s champion Meb Keflezighi is ready to compete against the best of the best Sunday in the 41st annual ING New York City Marathon. In a press conference Tuesday, Keflezighi told a crowd of media from around the world he is fit, feeling strong and excited to join a small group of marathoners who’ve successfully defended their New York titles. “As always, it's a stacked field, and that's how New York is,” he said. “New York brings the best in the world, and I'm looking forward to it.” In 2009, Keflezighi became the first American in 27 years to win in New York. Never say never when you are talking about Meb Keflezighi. After a gutsy 8th place finish at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, despite a broken hip, 35-year-old Meb Keflezighi of Mammoth Lakes, California thought his running career was over. But instead of giving up, Meb, the silver medalist in the 2004 Olympic marathon, persevered. He slowly worked himself back into shape and began an impressive comeback. At the 2009 U.S. Cross Country Championships, Meb finished first and in last year’s ING New York City Marathon, a race with one of the most competitive fields ever assembled in the event’s long history, Meb prevailed and became the first American to win the race since 1982...(for more click here)
