They were both too old, their aging bodies too battered — or so people said. Even Derartu Tulu didn’t believe she would win.
“I knew that at one point I would be good [again], but I didn’t think it would be in New York,” said the 38-year-old Ethiopian, who had taken time off after the birth of her second child and was still easing back into competition.
But last year Tulu and American Meb Keflezighi, now 35, stunned the running world with upset wins at the ING New York City Marathon. On Sunday, each will try and do it again...
