Deena Kastor came into the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics as one of the favorites in the women's marathon. The beginning of the race went out slow and comfortable for most of the field. As they were nearing the 5k mark Deena was seen on the side of the road grabbing her foot. She said she "heard a pop" in her foot and could not put any weight on it from that point on. Deena was forced to stop racing. She had to ride the bus back to the Bird's Nest. Not only was she unable to compete, but she had to watch the last 23 miles of the race on this bus behind the marathon field.
Mark caught up with her yesterday to hear about the tragic turn of events.
